You know what I always, always forget? I _hate_ being a team lead for anything. I delegate worth crap, am really bad at estimating how long things will take, and don't do well going between high level and detail work all the damn time.

I've done this to myself before _at this job_, although in a very different way. You'd think I'd learn. (of course, it wasn't originally supposed to _be_ a lead role...)

*sigh*

Poor Fizzgig! Can you delegate some of this, or work with someone to help you flesh out the schedule?

Can you delegate some of this

*stares at you* *looks at post mentioning 'delegating worth crap'* *stares at you more*

Probably? If I were not crap at it? And if there were _ANYONE_ in my company not horribly overworked on a regular basis?

Schedule: Trying. Making the product manager very nervous. Which is making me nervous. Sigh.

Sorry!

But there's a difference between delegating and delegating (I'm thinking "delegating planning work" vs. "delegating task work"). Maybe something for us to discuss in non-typing fashion. Since you actually *are* very good at asking for help and narrowing things down to what you need help with.

Asking for help with something very different from delegation (_telling_ someone to do something).

I have recently done the former (as well as letting my boss(es?) know that - even if I keep forgetting it - I need to _NOT BE A LEAD_). Shall see.

Ah! Oh. Key insight moment. We definitely should talk more about this. Quick summary:

Delegating, while at its heart involving getting other people to do work that is your responsibility, doesn't have to be *telling* people what to do. As you note most people are bad at both telling and being told, and it ends up all grumpy and like that. Delegating is about splitting up the work so the company/group as a whole can do the most work the most efficiently with the most happiness. Telling is the last resort; there are tons of other tools for ending up at the split of work that needs to occur. Involving people in the process of splitting stuff up makes them feel like they have a real say in what work they take on, and often they will take on additional work beyond what they would otherwise agree to.

Blah. And here I'm telling you stuff you probably already know, because I desperately want to help. La. And of course I'm only two or three chapters ahead of you in this particular book of life. ;)

Yep. Planning. Scheduling. Things I Am Bad At(tm). Especially if I'm having to do a lot of another thing I'm bad at (jumping between detail and overviews).

The very first thing I delegate is someone ELSE to the do the rest of the delegating!

1) love the icon!

2) I'm equally bad at delegating, to me the issue is "trusting others to do things I can do at approx. the level of quality I do them."

3) Ditto on estimating. I've gotten pretty dang good at estimating how long it will take ME to do something. I was horrified to find that doubling that isn't quite enough for "normals". :-)
