Yeah, I like it too. As one of the people who's spent his life turning science fiction into science fact, I have my suspicions about the answer to the question.
The one about the rocket pack. Such rocket powered backpacks as were developed were unweildy and quickly ran out of fuel. It was one of those ideas from golden age science fiction that just wasn't well thought out, and when put into practice proved unworkable.
I do have hopes for air scooters. But the biggest concern with airborne transportation is that the traffic accidents are really, really ugly.
air scooters: Yeah, the whole nasty traffic accidents problem is why I suspected that airborne transportation isn't yet really common. Would need a higher barrier to entry than driving, and driving is scary enough to learn. Would probably make it not cost effective enough. (I'd be afraid to try, myself, having pretty crappy spatial awareness. And yet I want to learn to hang-glide, eventually. Go figure. :)
Did you mean to make this post friends locked? I wouldn't ask except that I don't see why it would be and I know that it was happening accidentally for a while ...
